'Tis Autumn

Driving the weekly hour and a half one way to unload antiquities, there’s plenty of time to think about different things. This morning, through the rain and colorful trees, I remembered something that’s never gone away; the thought of walking down Calhoun Street, New Orleans, in Autumn, from a tenured university position, wearing a brown skirt, or dress. It comes every Autumn. That seems to always be part of the picture. As time goes on this becomes less likely. Instead of graduate school, there were warehouse jobs as a teamster. Then management at the lowest levels. Telling people just returned from, or on their way to prison what to do is not a good time. After that, supervising corporate accountants in the wonderful world of banking. Well, they dressed better, but the probability I get stabbed, only slightly less. I think Confucius said something to the effect, we become like those we are surrounded by. It shouldn’t take this long to believe in one’s self.

Every morning, for the last three and a half years, as I take the handful of “wonder drugs” that keep my heart and circulatory system going, I’m reminded this could end any time. This includes the ones to help me be a girl, but these I can afford.
In September, I instituted a self-imposed deadline. The first one for me in a long time. So many years ‘meeting or exceeding’ the ridiculous goals of others, that really meant nothing to me. I’ve read the value of a decent employee with regard to output, is about 60% at best. What a waste of my time it’s been. Well, back to the deadline. I had hoped to finish seven miniature sculptures by the end of September. I didn’t meet this goal, only made it to three. (Wow!,…could the stats be correct?) But it did show me, it’s possible. When all complete, I’ll post them to my ‘under construction’ blog.
Thank you for stopping by. If I had a point, it’s long gone. Guess I felt I had to write down that dream. It’s been coming every year for a long time. After that, I’m not sure.
Take care of yourself,
Fran
